In case you haven’t (or even if you have), authors Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy are here to discuss Once & Future, their favorite characters from Arthurian legend, and space dragons.For readers who may be unfamiliar with it, can you tell us some about Once & Future?Once & Future is the story of Ari, the 42 nd reincarnation of King Arthur, and the first girl in the line. She lives in a future where humanity is far-flung and Old Earth is a retired planet where she crash-lands and pulls a sword out of an oak tree.

As she releases Excalibur, Merlin wakes up and the Arthurian legend starts all over again.Merlin, who ages backwards, is finally a teenager—and not at all delighted about it. His goal is to end the Arthurian cycle once and for all, but first he has to find Ari, train her, nudge her toward the nearest throne, and unite all of humankind. The only problem is that the galaxy is controlled by a vile megacorporation.What drew you to Arthurian legend?We’re both big fans of Arthurian tales, particularly T.H. White’s The Once and Future King. White’s reinvention, written in the shadow of the world wars, became our thematic blueprint because it proves that stories about King Arthur can be funny, romantic, sad, magical, hopeful, and resistance literature all at once.Would you rather have Excalibur or Merlin’s magic?That’s a great question that nobody’s asked beforeMerlin’s magic comes with a lot of costs, while the trickiest part of dealing with Excalibur is the fact that magical swords have their own stubborn personalities. Excalibur, all the way.How did you come up with the idea to set Once & Future in space?Every year we seem to get a new spin on the King Arthur legend, but so many of them stick really close to all the elements of the original tale—setting, characters, etc.

By setting it in space we got perspective to look back on Western culture and how Arthurian legend seems to be an element that sticks with us forever. There’s actually a whole Renaissance Faire Planet in this book, which is all about our relationship with the past. Plus, we love putting our futuristic characters in medieval garb and having them joust.Who’s your favorite character in Arthurian legend?The enchantresses of Avalon hold a special place in Amy Rose’s heart, probably because they’re wild magical ladies who live off in the mists and follow their own rules. She had too much fun writing Morgana—who is a complete powerhouse.Cori’s favorite character is Lancelot, but that’s all they will say. Anything else might get into spoilers!What’s the most interesting thing you learned while writing Once & Future?At some point we decided to ask around and see what elements people associate with King Arthur stories—what they want to see in their retellings. Some people focused on magical swords and quests and love triangles, but a surprising number brought up dragons.

We’re revising the sequel to Once & Future right now.
